Prolific film writer and director John Hughes, whose credits include the ’80s teen films “The Breakfast Club” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” died of a heart attack while walking in Manhattan on Thursday, his spokesman said. He was 59.

Hughes also made Macaulay Culkin a star, writing and producing the three “Home Alone” movies. His spokesman said Hughes was visiting friends and family in New York when he died.

In the last decade, Hughes had largely turned his back on Hollywood to run a farm in northern Illinois. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Nancy, two sons and four grandchildren.

The 59-year-old was taking a morning walk in New York when he went into cardiac arrest, according to Michelle Bega. He was in Manhattan visiting his family.

Hughes was famous for his countless hit movies in the 1980s including “Sixteen Candles,” “Home Alone” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” His films made such young stars as Molly Ringwald, Demi Moore and Andrew McCarthy household names in the 80s, with fans dubbing the group of actors “The Brat Pack.”

The Brat Pack was a defining part of the 80′s movie scene that included Molly Ringwald, Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, Keifer Sutherland,  Ally Sheedy, Anthony Micheal Hall, Tom Cruise, Emilio Estevez, Andrew McCarthy, Charlie Cheen, Judd Nelson, Sean Penn, Matthew Broderick, Ralph Macchio and many more.

Some of the movies that directed are the quin-essential What’s what of the 80′s – Weird Science, Ferris Bueller’s day off, The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, Uncle Buck, Home Alone, Trains and automobiles, She’s having a baby, Some kind of wonderful, The Great outdoors, Curly Sue and many more great movies.

Hughes was born in 1950 in Michigan and began his career in the field of advertising. At the time of his death, he lived in Illinois and set many of his films in the Chicago area. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Nancy, with whom he had two sons, John and James.

Rest in peace John – The 80′s would not have been the same without you!

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Actor Mel Gibson, who is going through a divorce from his wife of 28 years, said on Monday his Russian girlfriend is expecting their baby.

“This is true,” Gibson said during an appearance on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” after the host asked him to confirm speculation that musician Oksana Grigorieva was pregnant.

Gibson, 53, who already has seven children, gave away few details, replying jokingly, “A human being, I think,” when Leno asked about the baby’s gender.

Celebrity gossip websites said the baby was due in the autumn.

LOS ANGELES — Beatrice Arthur, the tall, deep-voiced actress whose razor-sharp delivery of comedy lines made her a TV star in the hit shows “Maude” and “The Golden Girls” and who won a Tony Award for the musical “Mame,” died Saturday. She was 86.

Arthur died peacefully at her Los Angeles home with her family at her side, family spokesman Dan Watt said. She had cancer, Watt said, declining to give further details.

“She was a brilliant and witty woman,” said Watt, who was Arthur’s personal assistant for six years. “Bea will always have a special place in my heart.”

Arthur first appeared in the landmark comedy series “All in the Family” as Edith Bunker’s loudly outspoken, liberal cousin, Maude Finley. She proved a perfect foil for blue-collar bigot Archie Bunker (Carroll O’Connor), and their blistering exchanges were so entertaining that producer Norman Lear fashio’ “Brighton Beach Memoirs” and “Biloxi Blues.” One of his Tony nominations was for “Mame.”

In 1999, Arthur told an interviewer of the three influences in her career: “Sid Caesar taught me the outrageous; (method acting guru) Lee Strasberg taught me what I call reality; and (‘Threepenny Opera’ star) Lotte Lenya, whom I adored, taught me economy.”

In recent years, Arthur made guest appearances on shows including “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Malcolm in the Middle.” She was chairwoman of the Art Attack Foundation, a non-profit performing arts scholarship organization.

Arthur is survived by her sons and two granddaughters. No funeral services are planned.
