MobileMe Too: Microsoft’s mobile cloud service to be called ‘My Phone’

Microsoft confirmed at least one thing today that they were expecting to announce at Mobile World Congress in 10 days—My Phone, a service that will connect the phone to the PC and Web,” Tricia Duryee reports for mocoNews.“Microsoft was pretty much backed into the corner on this one after the sleuths over at Engadget discovered that the My Phone Web site was already up and running,” Duryee reports. “In a statement, Microsoft said: ‘Today, Microsoft’s My Phone Web site went live prior to its scheduled debut. However, we are excited about the new Microsoft My Phone service, which will be available as a limited, invite-only beta.’”

MacDailyNews Take: This sounds really familiar.

Duryee continues, “The cloud service will only work for Windows Mobile 6 phones and higher, and is designed to sync information, such as contacts, calendar items, tasks, text messages, photos and video from a user’s phone to a password protected site. While in beta, the service will be free and provide the user with 200 MB of storage. The recommended settings will automatically sync the phone once a day (between 11pm and 5am).”

“It sounds similar to MobileMe, the cloud-syncing service Apple launched along side the iPhone 3G last summer… However, the services aren’t exactly identical either. MobileMe syncs everything instantly, not at some odd hour during the middle of the night. It also gives you 20GB of storage and 200GB of monthly data transfer, but will cost you $99 a year.”
